North Enders*

Prologue: The North End is the area where all of the elementary students went to the North School. From Grandfather Coppock's house, to all West Greenville, The Park, the cemetery etc. It was in many ways separate from the rest of the town. The residences ranged from the town's wealthiest to the town's poorest. From Uncle Edward Hole, Phi Beta Kappa, Princeton to Herkimer Arnet, who lived next to the dump and pushed a cart as he searched people's garbage. From cousin Jean Louise, Radcliffe, Harvard Business School, to JoAnn Swank Lear, my lifetime friend, who grew up in abject poverty by the railroad track. She graduated from Miami of Ohio with honors. It was during the war and the years after when everybody supported everybody. All people working together. There was no jealousy. Religion, race or economic status did not influence relationships. I came from the wealthiest family in town and my best friends are some of the poorest. The North School was great. The teachers were the best. The best description is not of the geography, but of the people, of the teachers, of the superstars, and the success stories of my good friends.

North Ender Superstars.

Every town, and hopefully every block, has standouts. The North End produced a few superstars.

A). Santee Macy. A good friend of my Father's, second-generation Italian immigrant. Owner of the Wayne Movie Theater, ( Cinema Paradiso). His house was close to North School. Wife was awful. H fell in love with JoAnn Swank's sister, 19-year-old ticket taker at the Wayne Theater. Divorce Scandal! Santee's son by second marriage became a tennis coach. Taught my friend's wives in Greenville. Went to Florida and opened a tennis clinic. He then found the teenage Williams sisters in California. Convinced their father to let them come to Florida where he could coach them. They became world's best women tennis players.

B). David Meeker. Chairman of Board and President of Hobart Manufacturing, Troy, Ohio. Kitchen Aid products. Lifelong friend of Dad and Granddad's. I had dealings with him. Always loyal to Greenville.

C). Jim Steinle. One of our family's best friends. Lived out six blocks from us on North Broadway. Granddaughter Jill Steinle, awful story. Wonderful family.

D). Jeff Feltman. Jeff's father, David, a year ahead of me in high school. Moved into the house three blocks from us in the late 40's. Lifetime friend. Wife worked at Second National Bank. Son, Jeff, was Under Secretary of State for Middle Eastern Affairs. David told me the story of Jeff's disagreement with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over the handling of the Benghazi disaster. Jeff was sent to the United Nations, with a promise that when Mrs. Clinton became President, he would be top candidate for a top State Department position).

John Deardorff. John was three years ahead of me in high school. In late life, I put him up for Chevy Chase Club membership. Astounding career. Nelson Rockefeller's political assistant. Founded Deardorff and Bailey in Washington, DC, consulting firm that managed campaigns for Republican Senators and Congressmen, and almost Ronald Reagan's Presidential campaign. (another story).
