East of North Broadway ~ Deplorables

Prologue. I grew up in the best of times. When I was two years old we moved into our new house on E. Park Dr. " East of North Broadway". Dad and my neighbor the Browne's own the properties between Avenue E and Broadway mostly empty lots.
Granddad Coppock owned the park in front of our house and across the creek. He developed it into a state park. My only friends in preschool or my neighbors Billy Brown and John American Sayle and my sisters. Later f went to grade school "West of North Broadway". After grade school, high school and on to downtown Greenville, "Across the Creek".. This was the greatest of times. I try to recount how many people that were neighbors and friends in a very small community did so very well in life. Successes, not Deplorable's!

 

I) East of North Broadway.


A) Fred Brumbaugh. Hilda Brumbaugh Mangel Hilda graduate of Northwestern University. Married John Mangel, Williams University, Harvard business school MBA. Both extremely successful business and entrepreneurs Chicago. Martha Brumbaugh Furman. Younger sister. Denison University grad. Art teacher Towson University Maryland, Master pottery artist. First marriage Billy Stroud national nine ball pool champion. Second marriage it would Furman. Edward is very successful business man Baltimore.


B) Billy Browne. Only friend until first grade. We lived and owned the park in the woods best of times. Bill Phi Beta Kappa Miami University. Top of his class at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. Top Dr. Darke County general physician. In late life head Dr. Miami University University Hospital. Lifelong friend.

C) Jimmy Suchy Parents built house next to dad and mother. My dad was there) and lawyer for their business the local meatpacking company. Jimmy two years behind me in high school good friend. Graduate Wittenberg. Ohio state legislature. Later Republican majority whip third most powerful person in Columbus. Great friend.


D) Elizabeth Burt. Son Dick later mayor of Greenville.

E) John and Meredith Sayle. Meredith my age) through grade school and high school.. Graduate of Ohio Wesleyan. Husband US Attorney for Southern Illinois quite famous.
John Miami of Ohio graduate. Like me attended Columbia, MBA from Columbia business school. Career with Morgan Stanley. Then headed home successful business in eastern Ohio. Ohio Hall of Fame trap shooting pistol shooting rifle shooting.


F) Jeff Feltman. Father David two years ahead of me in high school. Mother worked for me at second national Bank. Great friends. Jeff Amb. to Lebanon. And then under Secretary of State for Middle Eastern affairs. Dad told me many stories about Benghazi; quite a successful career!

G).. John "the truck driver" wonderful friend of dads. Great story! Inherited farm from father. Took money in his 30s rented a suite in Newark's Waldorf-Astoria. Dated all the showgirls for three years. Ran out of money. Came back and resume career as truck driver. A real character!

H). Penny Gade. Penny year behind me in high school good friend. Married my classmate John Haug. (See I West Of North Broadway.) John developed computer technology for magazine Newsweek in this very successful career in New York with technology consulting firm for newspapers and publications.

I) Rick Macci. Ricks father. Santi Great friend of my father's. Own local movie theater. Second marriage to my great friend Joanne Swank's sister. (See West of North Broadway, G). Rick came back to Greenville taught all the local women how to play tennis. Later open his own clinic in Delray Florida, found Williams sisters in California brought them to Florida and Sam to be the best two women players in the world.

K) Patty Cottrell. My class homecoming queen. My date for senior prom. Beautiful gal. Married to Chairman Ohio football coaches Association. A big deal in Ohio!

L) Joyce Harter. Good friend classmate grade school through high school. Husband Tom Farmer classmate. (See, Across the Creek. B.). Tom football player. Wittenberg college graduate. Master's business degree Tate Business School Dartmouth. Senior VP East Coast Sprint phone company.

II) West of North Broadway.

A) Richard Hole. Lifelong friend classmate grade school high school. Division Ill college football. County lawyer. Darke County juvenile court judge.

B) Edward Hole. Married to my aunt Dorothy mother sister. Edward Phi Beta Kappa Princeton. Harbor Law School. (Aunt Dorothy one year Wellesley University.) CEO and chairman of the board American aggregates Corporation following granddad.


C) Jim Steinle. (Home not shown on North That Broadway). The hotel owner. One of the our families best friends. Granddaughter beautiful girl San Francisco Jim Steinle.

D) Jim Bayman.) Grade school through high school and later. Great story! His father was a humpback mailman. Mother said should work in a factory. But went to Ohio State and dropped out. Worked in the casinos in Cuba pre-Castro. Came back got degree University of Dayton. Later took over company that imported computer chips, one of the first in the country. He died a few years ago worth well over $100 million. Many charities in Cleveland area. Wonderful friend.

E) Bob Riegle. Dad County judge died when in grade school.) Classmate, grade school through high school. Graduate Pratt Institute New York. Fulbright scholarship to Holland. Architect and decorator for Morgan Stanley Wall Street firms, Hilton Hotels on and on. Recently moved back to the states from Paris.

F). Ferris Dunlop. Black family. Father Willie delivered place for ice boxes in the summer and coal for furnaces in the winter. Brother became a doctor. Older sister Norma Chief Nurse at the Greenville Hospital. Ferris also nurse at to Greenville Hospital and grandmother Brumbaugh's wonderful caring neighbor.

Ill). Across the Creek.

A ). Susie Vietor. the one that got away! Susie had gone to my church. She was a year behind me in high school. When I came home from college after freshman year I started dating her on and off to college. She came for homecoming at Princeton. She attended University of Colorado at Boulder Colorado. Was homecoming queen. Got her masters at Duke in education.

B) Tom Farmer. (See Joyce Harter East of North Broadway, L.)

C) John Lantz. Best friend grade schoot through high school my class. Nickname "bugaboo". Poor family often did not take a Bath. Always in trouble.*Halfback on our football team. Teachers would not recommend him for college. My dad got mad and made them sign his recommendation letter. He went to Division Ill college in Indiana. He was first-team small college All-American. Came back and was footba!I coach at Versalles ,Ohio. Voted top coach all divisions Ohio after three undefeated seasons. Ohio's highest high school coaching honor! Saw John every year until he died two years ago.

D) . David Girbert. Other best friend. David class behind me North school and high school. I was class president my year. He was class president his year. It is next door to John Lantz. The three of us did everything together. Many hijinks like shooting firecrackers at the police station. David start our football team. Capt. Miami of Ohio football team. Miami coach Johnny Pont said David the finest running back he ever coached. David briefly played for the Buffalo Bills later attended McCormick theological school Chicago and becafl'!e ordained Presbyterian minister.

E). Jack Balshum. Jack the year ahead of me in high school . Did not know him well. In early years playing baseball in the park he would strike everybody out. Later years after graduating from Ohio State six years top relief pitcher Philadelphia Phillies.

F) Mr. David Meeker. Born here. Good friend of dad and grandfather Coppock's. Help me when I came back to Greenville. Present chairman of the board of Hobart Manufacturing KitchenAid products Troy.

G) Annie Oakley. House where Annie came home to die.

H). Judy Riegle. Judy lifetime friend grade school high school one of my favorites. She married a Brumbaugh who died. She married top assistant coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers is had a great life.

I) Jimmy Goubeaux. Jimmy's parents my parents best friends. As children always doing many things together. Jim Catholic grade school year ahead of me in high school. Harbor Law school. Top lawyer Greenville. My lawyer for the bank. Longtime friend.

J) Bill McGreevey. Year behind me in high school. After college, I spent four months rooming with Bill on Neil Ave., Columbus where he was senior. Bill was a top billiard and pool player. I would hustle for Bill. I would go to a pool hall it in a game and then asked stranger built to join where he would take all their money.. Bill graduated MIT Masters, Economics. Prof. University of California Berkeley. Head of the World Bank Latin American economic sector.

K) John Deardorff. (K next to J). John three years ahead of me in high school. Graduate Tufts University. Nelson Rockefeller's political assistant. Later formed Deardorff and Bailey major Washington Republican consulting firm. His wife head of Madeira school. Many DC stories.

L) Edward Nelson. Ed my high school class. Number one academic in our class. Tackle on football team. Chief Boeing engineer for Boeing aircraft. Great career.

M) Joe Shockney. Dad local electrician. Joe my class high school good friend. Number two in the class., Honors graduate Purdue University engineer. Executive Vice President Valero oil company Texas. Big deal but still a nice guy!.

N) Gary Gruber. Close friend. Tackle football team. We both got in the Harvard, but he chose Miami of Ohio. Later graduate Princeton theological school. Career headmaster schools and educational consultant.
